Be Heat Smart on the train this summer
We know that it can become hot on the train during summer. At CityRail, we want you to enjoy your trip and be as comfortable as possible, so please take note of these summer travel tips:
If you do feel unwell, don’t get on a train. Ask a member of staff for help.
- If you are on a train and feel unwell, get off at the next station, where help can be called upon more easily.
- Always carry a bottle of water with you.
Why does it get so hot on some trains in the summer?
About one-third (31 percent) of CityRail trains are non-air-conditioned and so can get quite hot, particularly in the afternoon.
What is CityRail doing to introduce more air-conditioned trains?
CityRail is replacing all non-air-conditioned carriages, but this will take several years, given the size of the fleet and the time it takes to build new trains.
The fleet renewal plan has already achieved the following major milestones:
- We have completely removed the older "Tulloch" cars from service and from 2002 to 2005 have introduced 141 air-conditioned Millennium carriages.
- In 2006 and 2007 we replaced the 46-year old 620/720-class trains in the Hunter region with 14 new air-conditioned Hunter diesel railcars, all now in service.
- 32 new air-conditioned "Oscars" (Outer Suburban Cars) for use on intercity routes have been introduced since December 2006, with another 90 carriages to follow in 2007 and 2008. The 32 Oscars running on the South Coast Line will be progressively introduced on the Central Coast Line (as far as Wyong), followed by the Blue Mountains Line (as far as Springwood).
- Contracts have been signed and production is set to commence for the PPP project. This is CityRail's major new train renewal project, to replace the remaining 498 non-air-conditioned silver carriages and provide 626 new air-conditioned carriages to allow for future passenger demand. The first of these new trains will be introduced from the end of 2010. The total complement of these 626 new air-conditioned carriages will be introduced by end of 2013.
In summary, the Millenniums, Oscars, Hunter cars and the new PPP air-conditioned carriages represent a total of 903 new air-conditioned carriages that will have been introduced in the period from 2002 to 2013.
