What's happening?
As part of the Rail Clearways plan, RailCorp is duplicating the track between Sutherland and Cronulla. The Cronulla branch line duplication project involves the construction of a second track along two sections of the line - from Sutherland to Gymea and Caringbah to Cronulla. Currently, the Cronulla branch line is primarily single track with a section of double track between Caringbah and Gymea for all City and Cronulla bound trains to pass each other.
The full duplication of the Cronulla branch line will help eradicate the delays caused by trains taking turns to occupy the two single track sections that currently exist. It will enable an increase in peak hour trains to meet future passenger demand and once complete, will help reduce the occurrence of disruptions and improve the reliability of train services.
The project will cost approximately $212 million for the full duplication and also includes associated bridge and station works at Sutherland, Kirrawee, Woolooware and Cronulla.
The value of the work during this period is $3.5 million.
